Japanese Raccoon Dogs Caught on Trailcam at Snowy Latrine in the Evergreen Forest during Late-March

One to three Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes viverrinus, family Canidae) alternately visiting a communal latrine in the windbreaker forest of Japanese red-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, family Cupressaceae) to defecate there. You can hear them calling (whining) softly from time to time. The forest floor was still covered with lingering snow and littered with fallen leaves and branches of Japanese cedar. The dunghill grew larger and larger during winter because the scats weren’t decomposed and recycled by coprophagous insects such as dung beetles. Captured with my new trailcam day and night of late-March 2025 in Japan.
