Following their Hijra from Makkah to Madina, the Muhajirun were struck by a severe, water-borne fever (Humma Yathrib) that incapacitated companions including Abu Bakr and Bilal ibn Rabah (R). The Prophet Muhammad (S) prayed for the city's healing, a divine intervention rendered the city wholesome, protecting it from future lethal pestilence. After recovering, the community addressed the practical challenge of organizing prayer times, rejecting non-Muslim methods like horns or bells in favour of a distinct, vocal call. This led to the adoption of the Adhan, revealed via a shared dream to companions Abdullah bin Zayd and Umar ibn al-Khattab (R), with Bilal ibn Rabah (R) appointed as the first Madh'dhin to deliver it.
