Description
For centuries, the transportation of the massive Moai statues on Easter Island has been a major topic of discussion. How did ancient islanders move such gigantic structures without modern technology? In this video, we explore the fascinating "walking theory."
Researchers Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo tested a theory suggesting the ancient islanders used ropes to achieve a walking motion to move the Moai to their platforms. We examine their successful demonstration using a 10 ft tall, 5-metric ton statue. By using three teams pulling on ropes, they created a rocking motion that moved the statue forward step by step. This method proved that moving the statues was possible with coordination and enough people.
However, the mystery remains. Replicating this process on the scale of the original Moai, some of which are over 30 ft tall and weigh up to 75 metric tons, would be extremely difficult or impossible. This suggests the ancient islanders possessed engineering skills more advanced than previously thought.
