Description
The afternoon sun was still gentle when I reached our uncle’s sweet potato field. Digging sweet potatoes isn’t as easy as it looks — it takes effort and timing. But that day, I had a bit of luck. The field had just been washed clean with high-pressure water — the farmers do that to remove the thick outer layer of soil so the sweet potatoes can be easily pulled out. The ground looked like a golden carpet, dotted with purple and yellow treasures peeking through. I didn’t even wait for my brother — he had gone somewhere — I just hurried straight in and began collecting them, bunch by bunch. There were the purple-skinned ones with soft white flesh, and the golden-yellow ones that looked like pieces of sunshine. It was such a joy to see them come out of the earth so easily, glistening in the light.
Two days later, our elder aunt asked us to prepare something special for her visitors. She wanted me to make a pudding for them to enjoy after lunch, and my brother to prepare his famous sweet sweet potato chips (yes, double “sweet” — because they’re truly sweet!) for the guests to take home. He made the chips in two flavors: one dusted with cocoa powder, and the other sprinkled with icing sugar and cinnamon. I made a pudding with two layers — one from the white-fleshed sweet potatoes and one from the yellow — adding dates for sweetness and finishing with a drizzle of bee honey for that glossy, rich flavor.
When we finally arrived at auntie’s home, her guests were already there. The moment they saw what we’d brought, their faces lit up with joy. That happiness — the kind that food brings — is the sweetest reward of all. 💛
Love you all,
Nadee 💛💛
