Race for the Place: Cancer survivor on what The Gathering Place's annual fundraiser means to him

Melvin Hodge, a cancer survivor and Race for the Place team member, tells 3News' Danielle Wiggins about how The Gathering Place helped him during his cancer journey. Made from Race for the Place and cancer-awareness t-shirts collected over the years, the colorful creation has become a wearable timeline of friendship, community, milestones and memories. But the skirt tells a much bigger story than fabric and thread. It tells the story of a woman who has spent more than a decade living with metastatic breast cancer — and refusing to let it define her. "Hi, my name is Alice. I'm a wife, a mother, a godmother, an aunt. I love to hike and bike and craft, and I have metastatic breast cancer," Santurri said. "It's the last on my list because it's the least important. I have cancer, but it doesn't have me."
