It is one of the most common and serious cancers in India and worldwide. The reason I'm speaking to you today is that awareness can save lives. If detected early, lung cancer can be cured or treated successfully. Let's talk about the risk factors. The biggest cause of lung cancer is smoking. Whether it is cigarettes, beedi, hookah or even passive smoking, breathing someone else's smoke is equally harmful. Apart from smoking, air pollution, smoke from chulhas or fuels at home, exposure to asbestos, and certain chemicals can also increase the risk. Also, let me tell you, lung cancer is not just a smoker's disease. Today, we are seeing more and more cases, even among non-smokers, due to pollution and genetic factors. So, all of us need to be aware and be careful. Now, how do we know if something is wrong? The following are important warning signs, such as a cough that lasts for weeks or coughing up blood or rust-coloured sputum. Then shortness of breath or chest pain, wheezing sound while breathing, repeated lung infections, sudden weight loss, loss of appetite or constant feeling of fatigue. Often, people think it's just a normal cough or weakness. But if these symptoms stay for more than 2 to 3 weeks, you should consult a doctor immediately. Let's talk about diagnosis. Now to diagnose lung cancer, doctors may advise a chest X-ray, CT scan, bronchoscopy or biopsy. Today, molecular testing is also used to determine the exact type of lung cancer, which helps choose the right treatment. Now let's talk about the treatment options. The good news is that treatment options have advanced a lot. If detected early, surgery can completely remove the cancer. Other options include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. And in the last few years, new treatments like targeted therapy and immunotherapy have given very good results. Targeted therapy basically means we use medicines specially designed for a specific mutation in a patient's cancer. Immunotherapy means we train the body's own immune system to fight the cancer. These treatments have given hope and longer survival to thousands of patients. As we near the end of this session, my request to all of you is: please do not ignore a persistent cough or breathing difficulty. Do not think it's just a normal problem. Timely checkups can save lives. If you smoke, make a firm decision to quit today. Every cigarette avoided is a step towards health. And for those at high risk, like smokers, people with family history, or those exposed to pollution regularly, yearly screening is very important. Remember, awareness and early action are our best weapons against lung cancer. Together we can fight this disease and save many lives. Thank you, and take care of yourself and your loved ones.
