Description
On a rainy afternoon, we set out to explore Sarojini Nagar, a neighborhood that most people know for its bustling markets and bargain shopping, but few truly pause to experience through its food. What we discovered was a trail of iconic eateries, each with its own history, flavours and stories that have been feeding generations.
Our journey began at the legendary Khandani Pakode Wale, a place that has become synonymous with monsoon cravings. The rain outside made every bite of their pakodas even more comforting - from the crunchy soya stick pakoda to the rare kamal kakdi, along with gobhi, baigan, mirchi, dal and paneer pakodas. All of it came alive with their signature chutney.
We then moved on to Shahi Dahi Bhalle. Soft, melt-in-the-mouth dahi bhalle, topped with curd, chutney and a few dry fruits that gave it its “shahi” name. Every bite was a dance of flavours in the mouth. Hence people get drawn to this irresistible dish.
At Kulcha King, we met the warm-hearted Avtar Singh, who spoke about how the place began and what keeps it thriving. His crisp tandoor baked kulchas, served hot with chole and a tangy imli chutney, felt like food that comforts both heart and hunger.
Next came Durga Sweets Corner, where the paneer wale bhature stole the show. Soft, puffed bhature paired with rich chole made it one of those dishes you instantly want to come back for.
We also sat down with Surjit Singh Arora of Amar Jyoti Restaurant, who shared how he once dreamed of joining the army but instead chose to carry forward the culinary legacy of his family. His food speaks for itself - smoky bhatti paneer tikka, butter-soft garlic naan, and a comforting dal tadka that could easily win anyone over.
As the day wound down, we made our way through the lanes of the Sarojini Nagar Market and stopped at Sai Juice Corner. With a glass of chilled, tangy shikanji in hand, we ended our food walk on a refreshing note, the rain still falling lightly around us.
This rainy day exploration was a reminder that some of the best food journeys aren’t in fancy places but in the heart of local markets, among people who cook with passion and pride.
