I've wanted to cover this for a long time, as it's from one of my favourite childhood movies. If you've never seen Don Bluth's 1997 classic Anastasia, I highly recommend it. I like to think of it as alternate historical fantasy since the real story of the Romanov family was a touch more grim. Just a quick disclaimer, this is not a Bardcore cover; it's more of a loving reproduction. I created the instrumental and recorded the vocals and flute parts with three different Irish whistles in various keys. The original song was composed by Stephen Flaherty with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and performed by the incomparable Liz Callaway. Thanks for listening and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes for the New Year! The Art: The original illustration was a costume design for Amenaide by Michael Stennett, 1989. I adjusted it to look more like the ball gown Anastasia wears at the end of the movie. The Lyrics: Dancing bears, painted wings Things I almost remember And a song someone sings Once upon a December Someone holds me safe and warm Horses prance through a silver storm Figures dancing gracefully Across my memory Someone holds me safe and warm Horses prance through a silver storm Figures dancing gracefully Across my memory Far away, long ago Glowing dim as an ember Things my heart used to know Things it yearns to remember And a song someone sings Once upon a December
