Description

This week, I'm making some of my favourite pots, these are necessarily functional pieces, at least, that's not what I'm thinking about during their creation, rather, these angular vases with a protruding line across one side, are simple, decorative objects that force me to slow down and take more time over individual vessels. They've changed a lot over the past few years. They used to be relatively squat in appearance and the lines were bulkier, yet with time and after making many batches of these, they've become taller, more elegant in my opinion, and the lines have reflected that transition, becoming more carefully carved and sharp. It's only a small addition really but considering how a majority of my work is thrown on the wheel and is therefore symmetrical, this added feature breaks up what would otherwise be a completely uniform shape. It adds a direction, a face, it casts an interesting shadow across the straight planes and it gives the pots a sort of figurative nature, there's something alive about them, especially when grouped up. They're a welcome change to make after spending weeks focusing on solely functional wares; I slow down, take my time and really fuss over their forms. I've also recently made a number of these from black stoneware clay and glaze that I absolutely adore, in fact, I have a feeling they'll be your favourites... but you'll have to let me know. Thanks so much for taking your time to watch this longer video! It really means a lot and it supports my small business more than you'd think. 📖 • ORDER MY BOOK: https://geni.us/bymyhands 🏺 • You may also be interested in my 'A Beginner's Guide' series, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2WJhtTF0eGhQwf8g2LHcom_KrvJpH_JT Timecodes: 0:00 - Introduction 0:52 - Throwing the basic 'vase' shape 4:54 - Trimming the vase 8:53 - Attaching the line onto the vase 17:25 - Biscuit firing the vases 1000ºC in my electric kiln 18:42 - Wet sanding the line to refine it 19:11 - Waxing the foot-rings of the vases 19:48 - Glazing the exterior surfaces of the vases 21:31 - Glazing the interior forms of the vases 23:55 - Tidying up the glazed forms 31:45 - Loading and firing the gas kiln to cone ten, 1290ºC 34:16 - Unpacking the kiln 35:18 - Sanding the bases of the pots 36:20 - The finished pieces 39:20 - Clean up... • Find out much more via the link below! https://linktr.ee/floriangadsby • Get in touch here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/contact Sign up to my newsletter here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter
