Nitin Gadkari rejects ethanol conflict claims, says family firms produce only 0.07% of India’s output
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has rejected allegations that his support for ethanol-blended petrol creates a conflict of interest because companies linked to his family are involved in ethanol production.
Responding to the controversy, Gadkari said India produces nearly 1,500 crore litres of ethanol annually through about 550 production units. According to him, the companies connected to his family account for only around 0.07% of the country’s total ethanol output. He argued that such a small contribution could not provide him with any meaningful financial benefit from the government’s blending policy.
The allegations were raised after political opponents pointed to businesses associated with Gadkari’s sons and claimed that the nationwide expansion of ethanol-blended petrol could benefit those firms. Gadkari denied influencing ethanol supply contracts and described the accusations as part of a politically motivated campaign against him. The Congress had earlier alleged a conflict of interest and sought greater transparency regarding companies connected to his family.
The clarification comes amid renewed public criticism of E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol. Motorists have complained about reduced mileage, possible wear in older vehicles, and the absence of a regular petrol alternative. The government, however, continues to defend E20 as a way to reduce crude oil imports, support farmers and expand domestic biofuel production.
