Description
Every year, the Vezo fishermen of southwest Madagascar set sail for the remote Barren Isles, crossing more than 300 kilometers of open sea in fragile outrigger pirogues.
With no compass, no GPS, and no charts, they navigate by memory, coastline relief, wind and ancestral knowledge passed down since childhood. For the youngest sailors, this is a first migration — a rite of passage where fear, danger and pride collide.
Cyclones, shipwrecks, shifting currents and breaking waves are constant threats. A single mistake can mean capsizing in the Mozambique Channel.
Yet for the Vezo, the ocean is not just a livelihood — it is territory, history and spirituality. The sea belongs to their ancestors. Every departure is an oath. Every safe arrival, a blessing.
