In conversation with Ms Nanny Santana Leal de Figueiredo

Following COP30 in Brazil, Ms Nanny Santana Leal de Figueiredo, Advisor for International Affairs at Brazil’s Ministry of Health, visited Australia to attend a COP31 climate and health roundtable convened by the World Health Organization. At COP30, the Ministry of Health launched the Belém Health Action Plan (BHAP), the first international climate-adaptation framework dedicated specifically to health. The Australian Government has endorsed BHAP, which aims to help countries strengthen their health systems in response to climate change. In this conversation, Ms Santana speaks with Professor Eugenie Kayak, Deputy Director of the Climate CATCH Lab at the University of Melbourne. Ms Santana shares insights into how the BHAP was designed, how it can inform Minister Bowen’s preparation for the COP31 presidency, and the importance of foregrounding the voices of Small Island Developing States and First Nations peoples in global climate and health discussions.
