Description

I traveled all the way to the Florida Keys to answer one question… How do dock builders drill through SOLID coral rock underwater? Today I teamed up with Upper Keys Marine Construction in Key Largo to learn how marine contractors install dock pilings in one of the toughest environments imaginable — hurricane alley. These guys are drilling 6–8 feet deep into solid coral bed while working off barges in the middle of the ocean. Coming from Toronto, where we dig 4 feet for fence posts, this completely blew my mind. In this episode you’ll see: * massive marine pile driving equipment * underwater drilling through coral rock * how Florida docks survive hurricanes * epoxy-coated pilings * barge-based construction * tropical dock framing techniques * the culture shock between Canadian carpentry and Florida marine construction Big thanks to Adam and the crew at Upper Keys Marine Construction for taking me to school and showing us how it’s really done in the Keys. This might be one of the craziest jobsites I’ve ever visited.
