Tim Toole Ex-Amazon | AI Infrastructure Engineer AI coding has turned into a weird little bar fight on LinkedIn. I keep watching all these debates, and I think there are really three camps right now. The first camp is the purists. These are the software engineers who got into this field because they actually love writing code. They like the craft. They like figuring it out. They like the pain. AI feels wrong to them, almost like it is taking the soul out of the work. The second camp is the force multiplier camp. They still like coding, but they are not pretending AI is useless, they use it like a pair programmer, a second brain. It helps them move faster, but they are still driving. Then there is the third camp. The agentic AI camp. They are playing a completely different game and they do not care if the code is pretty and do not care if a human wants to maintain it later. Their view is simple, if agents can build it, test it, fix it, and keep it running, maybe the old rules do not matter as much. I can see the argument from all three sides. Software engineering might be changing from “can you write the code?” to “can you control the machine that writes the code?” That is either the start of something amazing, or we are about to create the biggest pile of spaghetti the world has ever seen.
