As soon as I saw the new AI Coke ad from this year, I knew I had to make this! The shorter version was surprisingly do-able in a small studio and I tried my best to replicate each scene as accurately as possible but without a reasonable time frame and budget. My original plan was to only focus on the visuals and I really didn't want to mention anything from the original video. However some of the screenshots were so bizarre and inconsistent that I can't NOT point it out.
I feel this illustrates a core example of how AI mish-mashes imagery into a final product that "feels" real but is clearly not. The final scene of the advert ends in a perfect, snow-covered carless village that's most reminiscent of Zermatt, Switzerland. However the architectural style is German half-timber or British Tudor style. This is the "fairy tale" house that people usually think of from medieval Europe. AI has clearly bashed several visual stereotypes into an attempt to create the perfect Christmas village. But it's created a location that cannot exist in real life because Germany does not have mountains. It's the lazy AI sloppiness that has clearly amalgamated Germany, Switzerland, Austria into one blob, without distinguishing between cultures, history or geography.
One can argue it's a fictional location like Studio Ghibli towns but that would be wildly offensive to Miyazaki. It seems much more like poor fact checking and assuming that consumers simply won't notice. Human artists will never make the same mistakes as researching references and real towns is an inherent and non-negotiable part of creating storyboards.
