Critically Endangered Sumatran Orangutans Arrive At Port Lympne Reserve

Half-brothers Malou and Hadjah are Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutangs who came to Port Lympne in late 2023 from Zurich. Sumatran orangutans are the rarest subspecies with around 14,000 left in the wild, making them one of the world’s top 25 most endangered primates. There are currently only 144 Sumatran orangutans in European zoos across 29 holders, with just 15 individuals living in the UK. Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, who work in partnership with The Aspinall Foundation to rewild as many of its animals as possible, are one of only three UK institutes to house this subspecies of orangutan. MEET THE BOYS MALOU The younger of the pair, Malou is very playful and displays a lot of curiosity towards his keepers and surroundings. Always looking for things to interact with, he is always the first to explore and investigate something new. Often sharing his findings with Hadjah, Malou is a very kind individual who loves nothing more than to climb into a nest and put his arm around his brother. HADJAH Swiftly becoming the leader of the pair and growing in size daily! Hadjah is five years older than his brother and uses that to his advantage when he likes the look of the fun enrichment Malou has found. Hadjah is a lot more sensitive than his brother and is usually hidden underneath one of his many blankets, peering through a gap at you.
