BOOM! Great news for Kākāpō

BOOM! Kākāpō are forecast to have the biggest breeding season on record in 2026. Kākāpō only breed during rimu mast events. This is where rimu trees mass fruit, and next year it’s looking abundant! With less than 250 kākāpō left, this is great news, but also challenging.   Kākāpō cannot thrive with feral cats and stoats around and our current safe spaces are already reaching kākāpō capacity.   A predator free Rakiura/Stewart Island is our best bet for kākāpō   We’re working on turning Rakiura into the biggest sanctuary yet so native species have more spaces to thrive.   Check out the links below to find out more.
