2026 BMW i3 Revealed Testing in Arctic Conditions With 469 Horsepower

BMW is preparing to launch the first fully electric 3 Series sedan, and the new BMW i3 is already being tested in the extreme winter conditions of Sweden. This Neue Klasse electric sedan brings a completely new platform, faster charging, and up to 469 horsepower. The upcoming BMW i3 represents a major shift for the brand as it transitions the legendary 3 Series into the electric era. Built on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, the sedan introduces sixth generation electric drive technology with an 800 volt system designed for faster charging and improved efficiency. The car can charge at speeds of up to 400 kilowatts while delivering strong performance from a dual motor all wheel drive system. BMW engineers are currently testing prototypes at the Arjeplog winter testing center in Sweden, where icy roads and frozen lakes allow precise tuning of traction, suspension, and stability systems. One of the biggest technological highlights is the new Heart of Joy control unit, which works with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to manage the powertrain, steering, braking, and energy recovery. With responses said to be 10 times faster than previous systems, the new control architecture allows the BMW i3 to deliver precise handling while maintaining the comfortable driving character expected from the 3 Series. The electric sedan will also feature advanced regenerative braking and improved stability when driving in slippery conditions. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, and the official design debut is scheduled for 18 March 2026.
