Description
The sound of a Tasmanian Boobook (Ninox leucopsis) making its typical 'boo-book' call at night. The calls of this species are quite similar to those of the closely related Australian Boobook (Ninox boobook), but they sound a bit 'coarser' and more frog-like, and are generally higher-pitched and faster in tempo. The Tasmanian Boobook sounds in this video were recorded in the Leven River valley, Tasmania. If you listen carefully, in the background you can hear a Tasmanian Devil snuffling around and feeding!
The Tasmanian Boobook (Ninox leucopsis) was recently split from the Morepork (N. novaeseelandiae) and is now regarded as its own distinct species. These species are also coloquially known as the 'mopoke'. More examples of wildlife sounds and bird calls can be found on my website https://wildambience.com/wildlife-sounds/
