British Gas Ordered To Pay Millions Over Prepayment Meter Scandal

“We're looking at nearly £200 million across the whole market going back to consumers here.” After an undercover Times investigation revealed in 2023 that British Gas was routinely sending debt collectors to break into homes and force-fit prepayment meters, the gas supplier has agreed with Ofgem to a £20m payout and will write off £70m of customer debt.
