Description
In February 2026, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway's DC 4818 hauled an excursion train down the Kinleith Branch. This is the closest any excursions ever get to Tauranga these days, on the rare occasions when they actually run east of Hamilton.
We were able to chase DC 4818 from Putaruru to Kinleith, then back up the line as far as Matamata. Passengers joined the train in Glenbrook, Pukekohe and Hamilton, and could either disembark in Matamata or stay onboard all the way to Tokoroa, where the locomotive was uncoupled before running light-engine to Kinleith. Once at the end of the line, she was turned around on the triangle (or 'wye' as the Americans would call it).
Also seen in this video is KiwiRail's DL 9291 hauling Train 483, one of the regular freight services from Kinleith to Mount Maunganui.
