Letchworth Garden City railway station is a significant stop on the Cambridge Line, serving the town of Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. Located around 34 miles north of London King’s Cross, the station plays an important role in regional and commuter rail traffic between London and Cambridge. For rail enthusiasts, it offers interest through its history, infrastructure, and position on a busy electrified route rather than through high-speed main line operations. The station opened in 1905, replacing an earlier facility, and was relocated to its present site in 1913. Its development was closely tied to the growth of Letchworth Garden City, the world’s first garden city, with the railway forming a key part of the town’s planned layout. The main station building dates from the early 20th century and reflects Arts and Crafts architectural influences. Although the original design allowed for additional platforms, only two platforms have ever been brought into operational use, a detail that is of particular interest to those studying railway planning and unrealised infrastructure. All services are electrically operated, reflecting the electrification of the route, which reached Letchworth in the late 1970s and was later extended fully to Cambridge. From an enthusiast perspective, the station’s appeal lies in its role on a mixed-use regional corridor. The Cambridge Line carries a steady flow of commuter traffic alongside semi-fast services, with occasional freight movements and stock transfers adding further interest. The straight track alignment through the station allows clear sightlines for observing train movements, signalling sequences, and dwell times.
