Traffic Stop Turns into Shootout and Hours Long Manhunt

During the traffic stop, the driver, Nikki Reynard, consented to a search of the SUV. The rear-seat passenger, later identified as 53-year-old Michael Decker, became increasingly suspicious and provided false identification. When the deputy asked Decker to exit the vehicle and noticed him keeping a hand near his waistband, a struggle broke out. Investigators said Decker suddenly pulled a handgun and pointed it at the deputy before firing. The deputy managed to knock the weapon off target and fell down an embankment while attempting to escape, suffering injuries during the fall. Decker then stole Reynard's vehicle and fled the scene as officers rushed to assist the wounded deputy. What followed was a pursuit spanning multiple roadways across Harrison County. Officers tracked the stolen SUV as Decker drove at speeds exceeding 100 mph and ignored commands to stop. After several failed attempts, spike strips deployed on U.S. Route 22 successfully disabled the vehicle. Once the SUV came to a stop, Decker exited armed with the handgun and exchanged gunfire with an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper. Despite the shootout, no officers were injured. Decker then ran into a wooded area, triggering a massive manhunt involving local police departments, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, tactical teams, aviation units, and federal law enforcement partners. During the search, investigators learned Decker had allegedly entered a residence, stole clothing, and changed his appearance in an effort to avoid capture. The incident finally came to an end hours later when an Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter located Decker hiding in a wooded area near Mine Road. Authorities repeatedly ordered him to surrender, but investigators said he refused and remained armed. Tactical officers moved in with a police canine and less-lethal tools in an attempt to take him into custody. According to the investigation, as the canine approached, Decker brandished a weapon toward law enforcement and the dog handler. At that moment, an officer discharged his gun and struck Decker.
