Nothing is more heartbreaking than a sick baby, and just when we think our hearts can't take any more, we have been given just that, a very sick, little baby girl. 10 weeks old, to be exact, and her life is at severe risk after being backyard bred and then falling extremely ill.
This tiny soul, who we now know as Pippi, was surrendered to us by her owner. Just days after purchasing her from someone who claimed their dog had an accidental litter, Pippi became dangerously sick. Wanting her to get the care she deserved that they knew they couldn't provide, we were called. We urgently rushed her to the hospital where she is now fighting for her life.
Pippi has reportedly been regurgitating/vomiting for the past week or so. She's already almost died due to a lack of oxygen during one of these spells, apparently. Of course, the other MAJOR worry is aspiration and subsequent pneumonia.
After only about 24 hours in our care, we fear that this innocent girl is dying. Her abdomen is full of fluid, and she had to get a gastric tube immediately to start draining it off. We're being told what we thought might end up being a hiatal hernia is far more unexpected, because the fact that this is happening in a 10-week-old puppy is unheard of and CLEARLY a sign of improper, neglectful, disgusting, abusive, and every other descriptor we can think of breeding.
She has a gastric hyperplastic polyp (abnormal growth) that is creating a blockage, and she needs very expensive and dangerous surgery immediately. We don't even have the time to think about it. She's so young and so frail, and not doing this right now will mean that she will die before her life has even been able to begin.
We try to tiptoe around situations a lot to not alienate and turn off people, but this will not be one of those situations. Pippi came from an "accidental litter" and was sold for $4,000. Dying and still being sold for profit. Does this sound accidental? Trying to use that argument does not hold up. It is sheer ignorance and laziness, and ultimately Pippi is paying the price.
Pippi is ONLY SIX POUNDS and fighting desperately for her life through a battle no dog should ever have to fight. She's miserable, and you can see it in her precious, innocent face. We don't know what else to do but move forward with surgery for her, because the only available alternative is euthanasia. We cannot live with that decision.
We know we beg every day, and times are tough, but we have to hold on to whatever hope and innocence there is left in this world, and if Pippi is not part of that, we don't know what is. Please help us save our girl, not for anyone else's sake, but hers.
