Xi-Trump meeting: Why was President Xi reading a script?

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held there much anticipated meeting in South Korea this week, resulting in a truce of sorts when it comes to the ongoing trade war that Trump ramped up this April with his worldwide tariffs. That included China agreeing to put a pause on its newly announced rare earth restrictions, which would have had a massive impact on US tech, including military production. By most reports, the meeting eased tensions between the two sides, with Trump praising Xi praising Xi as a "good friend" and highlighting "outstanding decisions." But that hasn’t stopped armchair China experts in the US making the most uneducated takes on the meeting, going as far as to suggest President Xi’s planned comments show weakness and fear.
