Accompanied by officials from the Irrigation Department, he inspected the condition of the city’s drainage infrastructure on Sunday morning, especially in the Gorabazar area. During heavy rainfall, drains in several parts of Baharampur overflow, causing waterlogging on roads and even entering residents’ homes. Ahead of the monsoon, the MLA visited various canals and drains to assess the situation and push for solutions. Residents have expressed happiness over the MLA personally taking initiative to improve the drainage system. Baharampur has several major canals and drainage channels, including Gobardhan Nala, Lakshmijala, Osmankhali, and Bormuri. The MLA alleged that despite receiving funds from central government projects, the municipality failed to properly upgrade the drainage infrastructure. However, the Vice-Chairman of the Berhampore Municipality claimed that work on improving drainage has already been undertaken and said the municipality would consider the MLA’s suggestions in future planning. MLA Subrata Maitra also criticized the former MP and the Congress-run municipal board over the condition of Baharampur’s drainage system. Meanwhile, Congress leaders argued that significant development work had taken place in the city during the tenure of former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
