Denver Officers Shoot Man Who Pulled a Gun Shaped Lighter at Gas Station

* (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Denver, Colorado — On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, around 8:30 a.m., the Adams County Sheriff's Office received a report that a Ford F350 traffic control truck had been taken from a roadway construction site near Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street, left running and unattended. Because the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracker and an interior camera that streamed live footage, members of the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force were able to monitor the truck in real time. Screenshots from that interior camera showed the driver, later identified as 35-year-old Joshua Jackson, operating the vehicle while appearing to hold a firearm in his right hand. That information was immediately shared with all officers involved in the surveillance operation, which included personnel from the Adams County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado State Patrol, and the Denver Police Department, who tracked the stolen truck through parts of Aurora and into Denver. At approximately 11:00 a.m., the stolen vehicle pulled into the Sinclair gas station in the 600 block of Santa Fe Drive, and officers moved in when Jackson stepped out and walked toward the store. Plain-clothed officers wearing tactical vests with visible law enforcement insignia verbally identified themselves and commanded Jackson to show his hands, but he did not comply and instead ran into the convenience store, where two employees were working at the time. Officers positioned outside the store continued issuing commands through the glass windows and doors while monitoring his movements inside. According to the official briefing by Denver Police Commander Matt Clark, an officer outside the front entry observed Jackson raise what appeared to be a handgun in his direction and, believing there was an imminent threat, fired multiple rounds. Jackson fell but continued moving toward an object on the ground, prompting both that officer and a second officer to fire additional rounds. In total, 13 rounds were discharged by two officers, an Adams County Sheriff's sergeant and a Colorado State Patrol trooper. Once Jackson was secured, officers and emergency medical personnel entered the store with a shield and began providing immediate medical care. He was transported to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was admitted and remained under care. Investigators later determined that the object Jackson had been carrying, the one that prompted officers to open fire, was a lighter designed to look exactly like a handgun, incapable of discharging any projectile. Neither the two store employees nor any of the officers were physically injured during the incident. Jackson has since been charged with auto theft and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
