Description
I've owned a Ferrari Challenge Stradale now for a couple of years, but I've been talking about them on the channel for over 10 years. Suddenly values of these cars have been going through the roof at auction so I wanted to head down to AV Engineering to give a detailed overview into what makes at Challenge Stradale a Challenge Stradale.
The Ferrari Challenge Stradale was introduced at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show and was Ferrari’s road-legal interpretation of its one-make Ferrari 360 Challenge race cars. It was a lighter, more focused version of the 360 Modena.
Interestingly, Ferrari never officially called it the “360 Challenge Stradale.” The correct factory name was simply “Challenge Stradale,”. The omission of “360” was deliberate, positioning the car less as a trim level and more as a distinct model.
Power came from a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-plane crank V8 producing 425 horsepower at 8,500rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque. The engine was paired exclusively with Ferrari’s electrohydraulic F1 paddle-shift gearbox, recalibrated to deliver significantly faster shifts than the standard 360 Modena. Ferrari claimed gear changes in approximately 150 milliseconds, supposedly faster than a blink of an eye (I guess if the person blinking has their eyes closed for 3 seconds).
0–60 mph is done in around 4.0 seconds, with a top speed of roughly 186 mph. But more importantly the car is 110 kilograms lighter than the Modena through extensive use of carbon fibre, titanium suspension springs, lightweight interior materials, thinner glass and reduced sound insulation.
It has stiffer suspension, a lower ride height, faster steering calibration and revised aero. It also became the first V8 Ferrari road car fitted with carbon ceramic brakes as standard.
