Description
From spear training: Suburi (素振り solo fundamental swings) and Sōkōhō (槍攻法 spear attack methods). Tenshin-ryu Hyōhō transmits Hōzōin Bunryū Kageha Sōjutsu (宝蔵院分流陰派槍術) as Tonomono (外物 External Weapons).
In Tonomono (外物 External Weapons) training, we take Momodachi (股立ち lifting the hems of the hakama for mobility). If we have long sleeves, we wear Tasuki (襷 cords used to tie back the sleeves so they do not interfere). Sometimes we also wear a Hachimaki (鉢巻き a headband).
Spear Suburi (素振り) places primary emphasis on Ashisabaki (足捌き footwork and body movement). This is a special drill in which we train to cover the maximum possible distance. In reality, we would not move this far in actual combat—but having the body mechanics to move when needed is extremely important. There is no downside to being “over-specced.”
