Description
“I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.” These opening words of the Apostles’ Creed are so familiar that many of us can recite them by heart — especially if we pray the Rosary regularly. Yet familiarity can quietly dull our attention. In this reflection, Br. Stephen Camara, MIC, invites us to recover the depth of what we proclaim by praying the Creed, not merely as a formula, but as a living story.
The Creed unfolds as a sacred narrative. First, we encounter God the Father, the Creator, who brings all things into being. Then we meet His only Son, Jesus Christ, who enters history, is born of the Virgin Mary, suffers, dies, rises, and ascends in glory. Finally, we are introduced to the Holy Spirit — the unseen but powerful presence who gives life to the Church, inspires the prophets and saints, and works through the Sacraments to convict hearts of sin and lead souls to repentance.
This is not someone else’s story. Through faith and Baptism, it becomes our own. The Creed proclaims who God is, what He has done, and who we are called to be as His children. As the Catechism teaches, the profession of faith is both personal and ecclesial, received from the Church and lived within her life (see 185). When we pray the Creed attentively, we step again into the mystery of salvation and renew our yes to God’s plan.
Take a moment — whether at Mass or during the Rosary — to pray the Creed slowly. Listen to the story. Enter it anew. Let the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit remind you that this saving work is not merely distant history, but grace offered to you here and now.
