Description

It's a gill net again, and we absolutely hate them. Widely considered one of the most destructive and deadly fishing methods on Earth, gill nets are often nicknamed the "walls of death." Made of fine, near-invisible monofilament mesh, they are designed to let a fish's head pass through but trap them tightly by their gills the second they try to back out. These nets are highly indiscriminate. While they target certain sizes of fish, they cannot distinguish between target species and unintended wildlife. Every single year, thousands of dolphins, whales, seals, sea turtles, seabirds, and endangered sharks are caught and killed as useless bycatch. Because these nets are often left out for long periods, trapped animals suffer for hours. Air-breathing mammals drown in agony, while others die of pure exhaustion, stress, or severe lacerations from the cutting nylon. It is sickening to witness. This beautiful seal was completely terrified and furious when we stepped in, but we couldn't let him become another statistic to these invisible killers. 🦭 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Please visit our website to find out more about our work and how to support us: ➡ Website: https://www.ocnamibia.org/ ➡ Donate via Paypal: https://ow.ly/BTm550PIavq ➡ Donate via Stripe: https://ow.ly/Xy1F50PIMzQ ➡ Support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OCN ➡ FAQs: https://www.ocnamibia.org/faqs Follow us on social media: ➡ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oceanconservationnamibia/ ➡ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OCNamibia ➡ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@oc_namibia ➡ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ocnamibia/ ➡ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ocnamibia 😊 Thank you for every like, share, comment and subscribe 😊 Ocean Conservation International is registered as a non-profit organisation under chapter 501(c)3.
