Transnistria, Abkhazia, Ossetia: a journey into the ghost countries of the Soviets

Abkhazia, Transnistria, the Donetsk People's Republic, and North Ossetia: these landlocked territories are all located in Europe, in Moldova, Georgia, or Ukraine. They are separatist republics, unrecognized by the international community, but under the complete control of Moscow. The Kremlin finances them, provides them with military support, and uses them to destabilize neighboring countries, particularly to prevent them from joining the European Union.
