President Reagan’s Survival: The 1981 Assassination Attempt

45 years ago this week, on March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt outside the Washington, DC Hilton Hotel. Shot by John Hinckley, Jr., a ricocheted bullet came within centimeters of his heart. The FBI's investigation recovered items from Hinckley's hotel room, including a leather suitcase with books and personal belongings. These artifacts are now part of the permanent collection at the Reagan Library, illustrating the moment that shook the nation and defined a presidency.
