Gabriella Conti- The menopause penalty

Menopause is a universal biological transition, yet its economic consequences have remained remarkably invisible in research, policy, and public debate until recently. This talk will present new evidence on the “menopause penalty” — showing how the menopause transition affects women’s health, labour market outcomes, reliance on public support, and overall wellbeing, and how these effects vary with symptom severity, healthcare provision, and workplace conditions. Gabriella Conti is professor of economics at University College London and Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Her research focuses on the causes and consequences of inequalities in health across the life course. She leads a programme of research on the economics of menopause and served on the UK Department for Work and Pensions Expert Advisory Group on Menopause in the Workplace.
