Why “National Socialism” Was Still Far-Right OOTF #shorts

“Volkssturm.” “Volkswagen.” “Volksjäger.” Sounds socialist? It isn’t. In German, Volk simply means “people” or “nation.” Every 20th-century German regime - Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, Communist - used the word to brand projects meant to appeal to ordinary citizens. What matters isn’t the label. It’s the ideology behind it. For the Nazis, Volk meant a racially defined Volksgemeinschaft, a community limited to so-called “Aryan” Germans. Jews, leftists, and other groups were excluded, persecuted, or murdered. Despite populist rhetoric aimed at workers, the Nazi regime was decisively far-right: • Social Democrats and Communists were banned • Trade unions were smashed • Leftists were imprisoned in concentration camps • Big business profited massively from rearmament After 1945, East Germany reused “Volks-” labels to signal socialist legitimacy, while West Germany deliberately replaced Volk with Bund to distance itself from both Nazism and communism.
