Sonogno is a small, isolated village at the end of the Verzasca Valley, where around eighty people live, tied to the land and ancient traditions. The stone houses, with heavy gneiss roofs, seem to have grown out of the mountain rock, and the narrow streets retain the echo of the footsteps of those who walk through them every day. The inhabitants still deal with agriculture, raising cattle and producing traditional cheeses, but some also find their way in tourism, welcoming hikers into their homes or selling artisanal products. Life flows slowly, without the rush of cities, in a small community where everyone knows and helps each other. In winter, the village becomes silent, covered in snow and isolated from the hustle and bustle of the world, and in summer it fills with color and visitors attracted by waterfalls, forests and the tranquility of the mountain. Sonogno has a fairytale feel, a place where time seems to have stood still and where each day is measured in the ringing of cow bells and the sunlight caressing the stone walls. In the past, Sonogno was much more populated than it is today. In the 19th century, the village had around 300–400 inhabitants, most of whom lived from agriculture, cattle breeding and forestry. With industrialization and the emergence of job opportunities in the large cities of Ticino and Switzerland, many young people left the village and the population began to decline steadily. In the 20th century, especially after the 1950s, the number of inhabitants decreased drastically, reaching less than 100 people. Today, Sonogno has around 80–90 permanent inhabitants, mostly elderly people, but also a few young families attracted by the peace and beauty of the place.
