Description
If you’re walking your dog on public lands, you could walk right into a government-planted cyanide bomb that is specifically designed to attract and kill animals like your dog.
This is a real device called an M-44.
And in April the Trump administration reversed a ban on these devices - meaning they can legally be used on over 245 million acres of bureau of land management land, adding to the millions of acres of state and private land where they are already active.
M-44s are meant to kill coyotes, foxes, feral dogs, and other natural predators, under the guise of protecting livestock.
But these traps are indiscriminate - they will kill any animal, including humans.
They’re baited with a strong-smelling meat lure and designed to exploit the exact same evolutionary urge your dog has: to bite and pull.
When they do, a spring-loaded plunger shoots toxic sodium cyanide powder straight into their mouth, instantly turning into deadly gas when it combines with their saliva.
The government itself reports that between the years 2000 and 2016, M-44s killed over 246,000 animals, including at least 1,182 domestic dogs between 2000 and 2012 alone.
In 2017, a 14-year-old boy in Idaho accidentally triggered one that was planted on a hill behind his house.
He was sprayed with cyanide and ultimately survived because of luck and the direction the wind was blowing - but he had to watch his dog, Kasey, suffer a terrible death right in front of him.
And studies have proven that these devices are not just ineffective at reducing predation on livestock. They’re actually COUNTER productive.
Evidence shows that coyote populations naturally increase their reproduction rates in response to these killings.
And yet, today, these hidden traps are still authorized on millions of acres of public and private land across the U.S.
If you're exploring public territory, look out for small warning signs or low-profile stakes, keep your dog in sight at all times, and keep your dog on a leash.
Stay vigilant, and share this to help keep your pets safe
