Politics correspondent Ben Quinn explains more about Count Binface and the UK’s history of novelty election candidates.
Binface is one of the only candidates running against Farage in the Clacton byelection triggered by the Reform leader’s resignation earlier this week. Farage resigned amid investigations into his party’s finances, including concerns from bankers first reported in the Guardian that the £5m gift Farage received from the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne may have been laundered money.
Farage said he wanted to be judged by voters and not the establishment or the media. His mainstream political opponents, however, accused him of trying to divert attention and the Conservatives, Labour, Greens and Liberal Democrats have all announced they will not stand candidates.
