Description
This is the Great Lakes Bald Eagle Nest in Traverse MI - home of Harry, Harriet & eaglet Snow 53 days old. The nest began to slip downward on May 25th when a supporting branch cracked & fell unto another branch of a nearby tree. That saved the nest from falling to the ground. On June 2nd, the nest collapsed while Harriet was feeding Snow. Harriet flew off safely but Snow went down with the nest. An emergency rescue was immediately put in place & Snow was found & taken to North Sky Raptor Sanctuary for evaluation & treatment.
The video includes footage from June 2nd & 3rd showing Harry & Harriet circling the nest tree after the nest collapse with vocals several times and again throughout the following day looking for Snow.
North Sky Raptor Sanctuary reports: " It was confirmed that Snow's fall from the nest resulted in two fractures: the first located in the ulna of his left wing, and the second being in the carpometacarpus (wrist) of his right wing. Armed with this information, we immediately looped in the remainder of our medical team, our friends at A.R.K. / Association to Rescue Kritters, and our avian orthopedic surgeon, who was on stand-by, to explore whether surgery to repair these fractures provided Snow with the highest probability for a healthy recovery.
Due to, in part, the early development of his bones resulting from Snow's very young age, the medical team has determined that a coaptive approach to the management of his fractures (utilizing bandages or splints to encourage an alignment and healing of breaks) offers the best chance of providing Snow with a favorable outcome.
As we work to begin this process, we will also continue to administer fluids, ensure nutritional needs are met, and provide anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medications for comfort. Again, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE, that the first 24 hours post injury remain crucial for seeking out less obvious symptoms that may point to internal bleeding, cognitive impairment, or other emergent conditions.
As more concrete information regarding treatment and, eventually, timelines becomes available, we will be sure to provide it! The most important step now is for us to maintain observation and minimize stress levels with the goal of encouraging Snow to begin the healing process.
