Ashley is a mum of a two-year-old. She says people’s reactions to her son crying or having a tantrum in public have made her anxious about leaving the house with him. “[When he was a baby] I would avoid leaving the house. I would avoid public spaces. And I would say, I probably still do now.” Still, she says she understands why some people prefer to go to spaces where children are not allowed. “I’m all for child-free spaces, but I really feel like you are entitled to a child-free life, not a child-free world.” With the fertility rate at a record low and more Australians choosing not to have kids, some want more child-free spaces.
