Description

Bruce is back in the dirt facing a mechanical mystery that’s been sitting with the exhaust open to the elements. We’ve got a classic Kato 750 excavator on our hands, but there’s a massive catch: it’s powered by a screaming Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engine and it’s suspected of taking in water through the exhaust system over the last 3 years in the harsh Australian environment. If you know diesel engines, you know water is the ultimate enemy, so we’re getting to work with owner John to see if there's any hope left for this old girl. Many of these old Kato Excavators were powered with a 6 cylinder Turbo Diesel Mitsubishi engine similar to that which were fitted to the Caterpillar diggers, but this one is running a 4-71 supercharged Detroit diesel. There is nothing quite like the noise of a Detroit blower spinning up after sitting for years. The big question remains: Will it start, or has this Kato dug its last hole? Have you ever saved a drowned 2 stroke Detroit Diesel? What did you find was best to un-seize an engine like this? Leave a comment below with your experience or "Will it start" predictions and let us know what Bruce should try to resurrect next. Thanks very much for watching.
