Four people were injured, one critically, after a violent confrontation linked to rival gangs Black Power and the Mongrel Mob erupted at a Christchurch home on Hoani Street in Northcote on the night of February 18.
Police were called about 9.30pm after reports that a gun had been fired during a heated altercation at the address. What began as a confrontation quickly escalated into gunfire, leaving four men wounded and a normally quiet suburban street sealed off by armed officers and flashing emergency lights.
Investigators later confirmed the incident was gang related and targeted at people inside the property. Reports indicate members or associates of Black Power and the Mongrel Mob were at the centre of the clash, reigniting long standing tensions between the two groups. Both gangs have a significant presence in parts of Canterbury and a history of violent rivalry stretching back decades.
Black Power, formed in the 1970s, and the Mongrel Mob, which emerged in the 1960s, are two of New Zealand’s most prominent outlaw motorcycle and street gangs. Their conflicts have periodically spilled into public view, often involving firearms, assaults and retaliatory attacks. Police have repeatedly pledged to disrupt gang activity and reduce the harm caused by organised criminal networks.
On the night of the shooting, St John sent three ambulances, three rapid response units and four operations managers to the scene. Four घायल men were transported to Christchurch Hospital, one in critical condition, one in serious condition and two in moderate condition. Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said two people remained hospitalised in the days following the incident.
Reeves confirmed the shooting was not random. “This was a targeted, gang related incident,” she said, adding that while the violence was serious, there was no ongoing threat to the wider public. Extra patrols were deployed in Northcote as officers carried out area inquiries and forensic examinations.
In the days that followed, three men aged 19, 31 and 40 were charged in connection with the shooting. Nineteen year old Tainui Mohi and 31 year old Cory William Smith appeared via video link in the Christchurch District Court on Friday. A 40 year old man linked to the incident was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court.
They face charges including aggravated wounding and aggravated robbery. Court documents allege one person was specifically targeted during the confrontation and that $200 was taken. During Friday’s hearing, supporters of Mohi called out “love you” from the public gallery. No bail applications were made, and Mohi and Smith are expected to enter pleas when they return to court in March.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests not ruled out. The incident has renewed concern about escalating tensions between Black Power and the Mongrel Mob in Christchurch, as authorities continue efforts to curb gang related violence and prevent further retaliation.
