This is a really rhythmic tune that sounds awesome on the acoustic, and we'll cover all the chords and strumming patterns you need to play along with the original recording. There are quite a few barre chords in this one so if you're still getting comfortable with those, don't stress, just take it section by section. You might also recognise this one from the recent Ryan Gosling film Project Hail Mary. Between that and the fact I'd never covered a Bowie song on the channel, it felt like the right time to give it a crack. I've also taught the lead guitar part on the electric, which comes in during the break and the outro. And yeah, we need to talk about that opening chord. If you've listened to the recording, you know the one I'm talking about. It sounds dissonant, almost unpleasant on its own. But that's exactly what Bowie wanted, and honestly, who am I to question David Bowie? So I've taught it the way it's played in the studio version. Here's a cool fact about this song: Bowie wrote the chorus as his own version of "Over the Rainbow." He literally sat down and said, "I'm going to write my own Somewhere Over the Rainbow." And what he came up with became one of the most recognisable melodies in rock music. The song wasn't even supposed to be on the Ziggy Stardust album.
