Homo erectus Encountering Tigers for the First Time

Tigers as we know them today only started to radiate into the different subspecies we know today around 108,000 through 72,000 years ago, so Homo erectus, having got to Asia around 1.8 million years ago, got to experience over many hundreds of thousands of years the evolution of these big cats which certainly preyed on them. The ancestors of modern tigers, an example being P. zdanskyi from the Gansu Province in China lived around 2.5 million years ago, and with their known differences, mainly in their skull region, these animals would have looked a good deal different to Homo erectus than what we know today as tigers. Big cats vary tremendously just on a species level appearance-wise, so back then, they could well have appeared a lot different! With Homo erectus dying out around 100,000 years ago in Asia, their last known stronghold, knowing that the last populations of them got to encounter modern tigers just as they were radiating out is a neat thought in the present time. Of course back then, all they would have been thinking about was staying clear of the huge stripy beasts that can take down rhinos!
