A patched member of the Mongrel Mob has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the 2018 manslaughter of Hastings man Eddie Peters, a case that remained unsolved for years before police identified the offender.
Twenty-nine-year-old Erueti Wirihana pleaded guilty to manslaughter and conspiring to pervert the course of justice after admitting he repeatedly punched and stomped on Peters' head following a confrontation at the tangi of his father in November 2018. Peters died a week later from severe head injuries.
The case was later featured on the TV programme Cold Case, and police eventually arrested Wirihana in 2025. Investigators also uncovered a plot by Wirihana and his partner, Te Aho Rogers, to create a false alibi and mislead police.
At sentencing in the High Court at Napier, Justice Jason McHerron described the attack as serious and prolonged, finding that Wirihana intended to cause very serious injury. He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of three-and-a-half years. Victim impact statements highlighted the lasting trauma suffered by Peters' family during the years-long wait for justice.
