Did You Know some yellow boletes on the Oregon coast can turn blue almost instantly when you cut them open ‼️😱 That color change is a real chemical reaction inside the mushroom, not bruising from dirt or rot. Some coastal boletes grow around trees like Douglas-fir, and when their flesh is exposed to air, pigments in the mushroom oxidize and flash blue or blue-green. Another cool part is that boletes do not have gills underneath like many mushrooms. They have tiny sponge-like pores instead. That weird blue stain can make them look dangerous, but color change alone does not tell you whether a mushroom is safe to eat, because some edible and non-edible species can both stain blue. Oregon’s forests are full of mushrooms that look similar, so this is one of those features that is awesome for identification, but never enough by itself. #nature #travel #animals
