CNAP | What is CNAP? Know all about the spam-fighting feature by TRAI here!
Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) is a network-based caller identification service that displays the verified name of a caller on the recipient's mobile screen, even if the number is not saved in their contacts.
In India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) finalized the CNAP framework in October 2025 to combat the rise in spam and fraudulent calls.
Key Features & How It Works
KYC-Verified Identification: Unlike apps like Truecaller that use crowdsourced data, CNAP fetches the caller's name directly from the KYC (Know Your Customer) records (such as Aadhaar details) maintained by telecom operators.
Network-Level Integration: The service is embedded within the telecom network and does not require a third-party app or an active internet connection to function.
Default Availability: As of late 2025, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed that CNAP be available by default for all subscribers.
Business Customization: For bulk or commercial connections, entities may have the option to show a "preferred name" registered with government bodies (e.g., GST or Trademark).
Rollout Status in India (December 2025)
Phased Launch: Major operators—including Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL—have begun rolling out the feature in specific circles like Haryana, Maharashtra, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
Nationwide Deadline: A full pan-India rollout is expected to be completed by March or April 2026.
Device Compatibility: The service currently supports 4G and 5G devices. Smartphone manufacturers are working to ensure all new devices are compatible within early 2026.
How to Check Activation
You can check if the service is active on your network by dialing the following USSD code on your phone's dial pad:
Code: *#31#
Result: If the status displays as "not restricted" or "defaults to not restricted," the network-based caller identification is active for your line.
