Hawk visits Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles and discovers something troubling hiding behind one of the most beautiful coastlines in Southern California. Directly adjacent to the beach sits a massive Chevron oil and chemical refinery, its footprint larger than the entire town of El Segundo, which was built to house Chevron workers.
Posted signs at the Manhattan Beach pier warn that fish and shellfish caught in the area are unfit for human consumption due to Chevron facility pollution. Despite the warnings, people are swimming, surfing, and enjoying the water just yards from active smoke stacks, offshore tankers, and a pipeline filling those tankers along one of the most expensive stretches of oceanfront real estate in the country.
The area is also hemmed in by LAX airport to the north, with planes taking off every 90 seconds, adding noise and air pollution to a community already saturated with industrial emissions from the refinery. The beach looks stunning. The water is another story.
