Sheffield city council have been bad custodians of our heritage. This started in the 1950s after the war as they used the bomb damaged to remove as much as they can. We have now lost the Market tavern and 23-35 Haymarket an old wine merchant. My concern is that the Old town Hall will go the same way if we aren't careful.
Environmental Information Regulations Request – Reference – EIR / 2526583
Dear Tim Wells,
Thank you for your request for information relating to 23-25 Haymarket Sheffield which we received on 02/12/2025.
Please find Sheffield City Council’s response to your request set out below:
The developer destroyed the frontage because he removed the building behind and left it totally open to the elements. This was sabotage of our heritage. Why is he not being fined heavily for destroying a listed building?
The requirement of the relevant planning permission was to retain the façade, and this was satisfied for several years. Unfortunately, given the passage of time, the façade and associated retaining structure became unsafe and action was needed to ensure public safety. Following assessments the required action was agreed to involve the removal of the façade and retaining structure.
The building was not listed.
We were told the council removed it so that it could be preserved and given back to the developer to re install, can you confirm what really happened?
SCC was ready to remove the façade and (if possible) ensure appropriate storage for reuse.
The site owner ultimately came forward and undertook these works, and we understand that most of the material was not retained for future use.

TimAWells Vlogger based in Dinnington Sheffield S25. Documenting and auditing the changing face of England and the United Kingdom of Britain. Some of the content will be of an historical nature, other will be showing the modernisation of our town centres, at the expense of the human element. Documenting how socialism, low traffic neighbourhoods, smart cities, Net Zero and Agenda 2030 destroy the fabric of the UK as we lose more of our Greenbelt and Farming land to solar farms and housing. Focusing on the Sheffield city region and South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire. Also recording the behaviour of policing at protests and their political bias.
Holding Sheffield city council, Rotherham borough council & Bassetlaw councils to account.
