The biggest recent CBSE controversy has been about the 2026 Class 12 evaluation process and marks awarded under the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. After the results were declared, thousands of students and parents claimed that their marks were unexpectedly low, especially in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Many students argued that their board exam scores did not match their performance in school assessments or competitive exams, leading to widespread concern about the accuracy of evaluation. The controversy intensified when students began sharing examples of alleged errors on social media. Some reported receiving blurred or incomplete scanned answer sheets, while others claimed that answer sheets appeared to be mismatched or incorrectly evaluated. A viral case involving a student who allegedly received another candidate's answer script fueled public outrage and prompted demands for an investigation into the digital marking process. More than four lakh students reportedly sought verification or review of their marks. CBSE defended the OSM system, stating that digital evaluation was introduced to improve transparency, consistency, and step-wise marking. The board maintained that the system reduces manual errors and ensures fair assessment. At the same time, it acknowledged that some discrepancies had been reported and announced mechanisms for students to apply for photocopies of answer sheets, verification of marks, and re-evaluation. The issue expanded beyond marks alone when allegations surfaced regarding technical vulnerabilities and irregularities connected to the OSM framework. Reports led to scrutiny by the Ministry of Education, which began examining the evaluation process and related administrative decisions. CBSE later clarified that the actual evaluation portal had not been hacked and that some viral claims referred to a testing platform rather than the live marking system. In response to growing student dissatisfaction, CBSE recently launched an online portal for marks verification and re-evaluation. The board says the portal is intended to provide a transparent process for students who believe errors may have occurred in their evaluation. However, delays and technical issues with the portal have also drawn criticism from students awaiting re-checking before college admissions begin. Overall, the controversy has become one of the most discussed education issues in India this year, raising questions about digital evaluation systems, result accuracy, and the safeguards needed when large-scale examinations move from traditional paper checking to technology-driven assessment.
